So far this season, in 14 appearances, Chris Smalling has given the ball away an average of 7 times per game. This is simply not acceptable for a defender at any level, never mind one at a club like Manchester United. This shocking stat isn't his only transgression this season, however, and by all accounts the England stopper has had a poor term. His pass completion rate of just 80% is the second lowest of any Manchester United player to take part in a game this season, and that cannot be allowed to carry on at the top level of domestic football, especially in a team that plays progressive football from the back and doesn't look to smash it forward to a big striker. By consistently playing Smalling, Moyes is allowing his opponents to win the ball back easily from a weak link in a key position and if he carries on giving the ball away, United just won't improve.
