Staying with the theme of central midfield, Tom Cleverley could also find himself on the chopping block in January if he doesn't start turning in some more consistent performances. Big things were expected of the 24-year-old when he broke into the senior side in 2009, as he forged an exciting midfield partnership with the aforementioned Anderson at the start of the 2011/12 season. The duo put in some swashbuckling performances to help United score 21 goals in their opening four games of the season including 3-0, 8-2 and 5-0 results against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers, while Cleverley was also impressive in the 2011 Community Shield Final against Manchester City. As a result, the starlet was heralded as the next Paul Scholes. Needless to say, such lofty expectations have not been realised and, after putting in more than a few anonymous displays this season, you can't help but question if they ever will be. With Michael Carrick still out injured, this has been Cleverley's big chance to establish himself in central midfield and he has failed to seize the opportunity.
