Newcastle United took on Man City in an enthralling encounter at St James' Park yesterday afternoon. The pulsating match ended in a 2-0 win for the Sky Blues, but the score line only tells half of the story. The match was full of controversy and drama; with a packed stadium witnessing sublime play, disallowed goals and some abysmal refereeing decisions. City took the lead early through Edin Dzeko's close range finish, the Bosnian striker profiting from a fine Kolarov cross. Newcastle worked hard to get back into the game and around the half hour mark the home fans thought that Tiote's sweet strike had drawn their team level. After deliberation the officials bizarrely ruled the goal to be offside, causing much uproar amongst the fans and the home team bench. Buoyed by a sense of injustice the Magpies threw everything at City in the second half, with Tiote in particular impressing, but their valiant efforts came to nothing. A rash tackle on Samir Nasri towards the end of the game saw the Frenchman stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury. As the game moved towards the final whistle Fernandinho saw his headed effort hit the bar, before Alvaro Negredo took advantage of the seven minutes stoppage time to fire the Citizens into an unassailable two goal lead.
