Yevhen Konoplyanka looked all set for a move to Liverpool before Dnipro stepped in at the last minute stating that they weren't going to sell him after all, leaving Liverpool, and Ian Ayre in particular, who flew out to complete the deal. The problem here is the deal should've been completed long before it reached that stage - in fact, how negotiations dragged on into the final day of the window is simply baffling. Liverpool's aim this season is to get back into the Champions League, but they face some really stiff competition from the clubs around them, including Everton, and their failure to capture their prime target might come back to haunt them badly. The Reds now have to work with what they've got, and even if the intention is to revisit the Konoplyanka situation in the Summer, by then it could all be too late, as other suitors no doubt emerge in the wake of another half season to impress.
