Spurs Transfers: 5 January Signings To Save Andre Villas-Boas' Job

Tottenham are also in desperate need of at least one new striker in January. Roberto Soldado is suffering from a worrying drought in front of goal while one of Jermaine Defoe or Emmanuel Adebayor will surely be shown the door in the January window. Both are on the fringes as things stand and out of Villas-Boas' reckoning, and it would be a big surprise if both came out of the next window intact. Should Villas-Boas pull the trigger, Spurs would have a dramatic dearth in strikers, with only rookie Harry Kane left in reserve. Clearly then, the need to get rid of the deadwood that is Adebayor and (perhaps harshly) Defoe needs to be balanced with bringing in capable and suitable replacements. A short-term move for Fernando Llortente may suit, with the former Athletic Bilbao-turned Juventus striker down in the pecking order at the Italian champions and available for a six-month loan spell. Said deal would appear to suit Spurs given the lack of an initial transfer fee and would allow them to keep one of Defoe/Abebayor without having to splash the cash on two big replacements. Derby rivals Arsenal are interested, however, and are on the lookout for backup for Oliver Giroud.
