In Davide Santon and Mathieu Debuchy, Newcastle have two full-backs who could quite easily play on the wings, given their attacking prowess and speed. Santon was instrumental in two of Newcastle's three goals against Chelsea, and is likely to take on a similarly attacking role against Spurs to link up with Yoan Gouffran on the left of attack. But Mathieu Debuchy, the first Frenchman who arrived in the January window will find he is pushed further back into a defensive role than we saw at the Euros in the summer, thanks to the attacking play of Gareth Bale, the former full-back turned world class winger. This will be the biggest test for Debuchy, who is occasionally criticised for his defensive play, as if Bale senses a weak point, he will be looking for the ball more and more to run at the full-back. Steven Taylor is likely to have to help out on the left-hand side of defence when Bale is on the ball too, and keeping the Welshman quiet has to be objective number one for Alan Pardew's men. If Debuchy can force Bale back as well with some runs beyond Jonas Gutierrez, Spurs' attack will be blunted, but the key will be not to leave any space for him to exploit around the edge of the box.
