10 Best Cliffhangers Of Modern Doctor Who

6. Bad Wolf

The brilliance in the epic conclusion to this episode is how one word of dialogue turns the scene on its head. The revelation that the Daleks are not dead, but are in fact now numbered in the hundreds of thousands and about to take down Planet Earth is one heck of a cliffhanger in its own right. But it's Christopher Ecclestone's speech that really sets us up for an epic finale.

Having taken Rose as hostage, the Dalek fleet offer an impossible ultimatum- give himself up or his 'associate' dies. The response is perfect. "No". What? "I said No". For a few shocking moments we are in the same headspace as the metal villains, struggling to believe that the Doctor would actually give up his companion that easily.

What follows is a powerhouse performance from Ecclestone who delivers a speech that is part anger, part spite and 100% genius. Despite the Daleks seeming to hold all the cards, the Doctor somehow turns the tables in one awesome moment.

The final chanting of 'exterminate' from the thousands of Daleks going into battle maintains the threat level in the minds of the viewer and leaves us craving the battle to come. The finale lives up to this cliffhanger, which emphasises that while the Doctor and his enemies have some things in common, they also couldn't be more different.
