On a show like Doctor Who, it's all too easy to poke fun at the special effects, especially once the show moves to colour and things like all-too-visible green screen effects become obvious. That, and the classic series never had a robust budget, so even some of the best designs came off looking a bit ratty at times. And then there were the times when you wondered whether the designers weren't just f****ing with you intentionally - and sometimes, maybe literally. 1971's The Claws of Axos is one of those times. The Axons are one of those races whose technology is all biomechanical in nature, so you'd expect there to be all manner of dangling bits, but the Eye of Axos is... particularly dangly, as you can see in the image above. In fact, it's hardly an eye at all... unless, of course, we're talking about another body part that has one eye. Ahem. Would that this were the only time that '70s Who offered up a creation that makes us shift about in our seats in discomfort, but it's not. Honourable mention in this category goes to Alpha Centauri in the two Peladon stories, but seeing as we like him and seeing as he has a skirt for the sake of modesty, he doesn't get his own entry.
