10 Most Disappointing Doctor Who Episodes

By JG Moore /

7. Daleks In Manhattan / Evolution Of The Daleks €“ Series 3 Episode 4 / 5

The Problem While Series 3€™s Dalek two-parter gets a lot of bad press, its only real negative point (apart from seriously playing fast and loose with the laws of biology and physics) is the Daleks€™ Pig Slaves. They ostensibly fill the role of the Daleks€™ foot soldiers and dumb muscle but from a narrative point of view, they make no sense. They€™re made by genetically mutating humans of low intelligence but there€™s no reason for why the Daleks would turn people into pigs other than the episode needing some kind of scary monster. How To Fix It Replace them with brainwashed humans or, better yet, bring back the Robomen. It would make considerably more sense within the story as brainwashing people takes a lot less effort and resources than rewriting their entire genetic structure. Plus, Martha€™s guilt at fatally electrocuting a group of them would hit a lot harder if the beings she€™d just killed were human rather than deformed mindless monsters, which would also extend to the battle of Hooverville. The homeless readily gun down the Pig Slaves but it would make for a much more interesting scene if they were forced to shoot beings that were recognisable as humans. Especially if one of the secondary characters ended up facing down a friend or relative who had been converted.
