Where do we go from here? Can Doctor Who last another ten years? That depends on how committed the BBC and future showrunners are to pushing boundaries for the sake of story and not shock or gimmick value. Theres a danger when a show becomes too much of a cash cow. The front office is afraid of any change that may disturb the status quo and the production team is afraid of the front office. At present however, Doctor Who shows no signs of allowing its popularity to overshadow its commitment to good, solid story telling. Much like humanity, the Doctor is at a pivotal point in his evolution. Will the character break free from the confines of traditionalist and rigid thinking? Will we see greater exploration into issues of class, race and gender? Will a more varied group of voices be allowed to participate in writing, directing and producing the show? There are signs that Steven Moffat is laying subtle groundwork for such a shift. It is certainly possible for Doctor Who to take a lead role in breaking through the biases of current mainstream programming and not only push but shred the envelope and provide us with exciting, thoughtful, hilarious and profound stories for many years to come.
