For a program featuring a time-and-space-traveling alien Doctor Who is surprisingly realistic or at least emotionally honest. This isnt new but it is one reason why the current iteration of the show is so effective. While the Doctor is a creature that walks in eternity the central tenet of his life is loss. His identity is stripped away and replaced, his friends die or leave, his home and family are out of reach. Change is forced upon him as it is upon all of us and there is no choice but to adapt or suffer the consequences. Perhaps what we are witnessing as we peer at our screens from the couch on a Saturday night are the adventures of the TARDIS. After all that is the one thing in the show that always remains the same. It is interesting to imagine these stories being told from the point of view of a dimensionally transcendent alien entity in the shape of a police box.
