11 Biggest Problems With The Chris Chibnall Doctor Who Era

4. The Companions Have Been Poorly Served

It was a bit worrying when three companions were announced to be joining the Thirteenth Doctor, as it seemed like too many. Sure enough, it's been a complete mess. Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) are both well-played, and this isn't the actors' fault; much like The Doctor they travel with, good actors have been let down by the writing.

For example, Ryan is introduced as struggling with Dyspraxia but then this pretty much disappeared after two episodes. He also never got a proper arc, with his reunion with his estranged dad in Resolution feeling very arbitrary.

For Yaz, it's been even worse. She hasn't been given defining character traits, and she's been robbed of any actual story arc even worse than Ryan has. For example, in The Woman Who Fell to Earth, Yaz was having concerns about her career as a police officer, but this was literally never mentioned again afterwards.

However, Bradley Walsh's Graham is terrific, and is far better in terms of the writing, but even he's had some issues. He hasn't had a real arc either, with the loss of wife and his battle with cancer not being mentioned enough after the first episode.
