8 Things The New Star Trek Series Must Do Right

7. Avoid Fan Pandering As Much As Possible

There€™s a very simple reason every popular TV show/movie/videogame ever gets remade, and that€™s because nostalgia is a powerful tool. People want to relive the emotions they experienced the first time around with something new, which makes reboots easy to market. Since Star Trek has a rich mythology to draw from the temptation to pull old stories and characters to appeal to fans will be hard to resist. This should be avoided as much as possible though. The show has to update Star Trek for a new generation, which means breaking away from the past and establishing a unique identity. Not to pick on the new movies again but they were dripping with fan pandering moments including recreating famous scenes, characters and inserting a pointless Leonard Nimoy cameo into Star Trek Into Darkness. Star Trek should be about exploring new frontiers, not constantly revisiting old ones. That€™s not to say they can't insert easter eggs now and again. A tribble here, a wink to Captain Kirk over there. Something fun that doesn€™t draw too much attention to itself. And if the new show is going to have links to the past then to paraphrase Spock: at least make them feel logical.
