8 Things The New Star Trek Series Must Do Right

6. The Ship Needs A Diverse Crew

Star Trek has always championed the importance of diversity, which can be seen in the line-up of the various crews. Different races, genders and alien species all working together as a team, regardless of background. The new show must continue this fine tradition but updated for modern sensibilities. Top of the list should be the inclusion of a LGBT character. Gene Roddenberry stated way back in 1987 that an openly gay character would appear on the show, and Sulu himself George Takei has been lobbying for this since the show began. That it still hasn€™t happened is a real pity. Now would be the perfect opportunity to introduce a LGBT character to the crew, demonstrating that in the future people can love whoever the hell they want with no issues. So long as this is done in a natural way and not just to tick off a diversity box, it would be a landmark move for a franchise already held in high regards for landmark moves.
