Doctor Who At 50: A Definitive Year By Year Guide

2012

Like the calm before all storms, this year gave the show a little breather, with only (less than) half a series being broadcast. The prequel mini-series Pond Life was shown via the BBC website in August, making way for Amy and Rory's final five outings in September. The first of which offered quite a surprise with an enigmatic appearance from actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, someone who wasn't expected to appear until after the Ponds had departed. And what a departure it was, New Who's longest serving companions were given a exit that no-one could fault. Timey Wimey daughter River Song, little Amelia Pond, and even a statuesque Weeping Angel from New York harbour: The Angels Take Manhattan had it all. But when Christmas came round the mystery of Clara came springing back. Again.

In this Golden Anniversary year it seems as though nothing is out of bounds. From celebratory DVD boxsets to special edition stamps, there has been merchandise like never before. Eclipsing this somewhat however, is the announcements of not one but two new Doctors, courtesy of John Hurt and Peter Capaldi. As for the series itself, despite a lukewarm reception to the second half of series 7, the mystery of Clara was finally revealed only to pose another even bigger, with the history of the Doctor himself thrown into turmoil. Fans have since been waiting with baited breath to find out more about Hurt's mysterious incarnation, and even Paul Mcgann returned to the screen once more.
