Doctor Who: All Doctors Ranked From Worst To Best

12. The Fifth Doctor - Peter Davison

Best Episode: The Caves Of Andronzani - the greatest regeneration story of all time. Worst Episode: Warriors From The Deep - Silurians and Seas Devils? How did it end up so bad? Enter the Myrka... After the huge impact of Tom Baker's Doctor on the show, his successor was always going to have a tough time meeting audience expectations. Producer John Nathan-Turner went for a character far removed from the imposing, larger than life persona of Baker; the result was Peter Davison's boyish Doctor - the youngest actor to play the role until Matt Smith came along. But it wasn't just the look, it was the character that was radically different and it wasn't fully successful. The Fifth Doctor had some great stories - The Caves Of Andronzani is still the greatest regeneration story of all time - but he himself didn't make much of an impact. Overpowered by loud companions and reactive rather than proactive in nature, this Doctor often came across as a bit of a wet fish and certainly not in control of the situation. He was simply too nice at times to be imposing. He wasn't a bad Doctor, just not a dynamic one and sadly he comes across as forgettable on more than one occasion.
