Clara is a complicated being; intelligent, strong and kind while deceitful, flawed and confused. As the season progresses she descends into self-absorption and a lust for power. Her love for both Danny and the Doctor does not deter her from overt manipulation to obtain what she wants. The cardboard Clara from series seven B is gone. Series eight Clara is a masterfully written, fully fleshed out individual. She waltzes through these stories breathing with vivid life and at times not at all likeable. Her interactions with the alien Doctor are all the more profound precisely because they are so human. Steven Moffats era is defined by its dedication to the complexity of experience, behavior and emotion. The companions role is less sidekick and more moral compass. Morality, however, shifts with situation and is not something real human beings cling to. We are often self-serving, greedy and power hungry and Clara is all of these things. This does not mean she is not also brave, thoughtful and nurturing. Clara is not meant to be liked. She is meant to be real.
