A child in a story is a scary thing and not in a glowing eyed evil spawn kind of way. Writing for children often comes across as heavy-handed, with the poor kid forced to act like an adults idea of what a child should be rather than what they are. The character of Maebh from In the Forest of the Night however was a breath of fresh air. While the story itself is weak, Maebh brings us a sense of urgency and desperation as she acts out in confusion and fear while not able to understand what is happening to her. Peter Capaldis chemistry with children is lovely to watch. Like his predecessor Matt Smith, he has a natural rapport with the younger set. He is concerned without being condescending. Listening, and the consequences of not doing so, is an underlying theme throughout series eight. One of the Doctors great strengths is his willingness to listen to the voices that would otherwise be lost in the crowd.
