THE WISH Imagine that the Doctor is on Earth investigating a small Dalek patrol thats on the planet. As hes snooping around, he fails to notice that a Dalek is about to see him. At the last minute, hes knocked to the ground by an elderly man. The Doctor is surprised to learn that the man knows what Daleks are, given that everyone else on Earth seems to have forgotten their big invasion. The man explains that hes fought them before, and introduces himself as Ian Chesterton. This could then lead into a big story where the Doctor initially goes by his John Smith name, and the two men work together to defeat the Dalek patrol. Then for some reason, the Doctor would have to go to the TARDIS. Ian would walk inside, and get excited, expecting to see the Hartnell Doctor, but then hed get to learn about regeneration, and the two men would be properly reunited. ODDS OF THIS HAPPENING Exactly like this? Probably close to 0%. I think it has a lot of story potential, and Id love to have a scene of Ian and the Doctor talking together about getting older, and how amusing Ian finds it that theyve essentially switched roles, with him as the old man and the Doctor as the young upstart. But I just dont think this is likely to occur. However, I do think it fairly reasonable that Ian, who, along with Barbra, was one of the first human companions for the Doctor, will reappear in some form in the anniversary special. William Russell has been involved in the Big Finish audios featuring Ian, and despite his advanced years, seemed spry enough at the Los Angeles Gallifrey convention this year. Therefore having him do at least something on the show is not at all impossible, and shall require only the will to do so.
