Doctor Who: 11 New Who Moments That Never Made It To Screen

6. The Doctor Recruits Captain Jack €“ A Good Man Goes To War

One thing a lot of viewers picked up on about Series 6€™s A Good Man Goes To War was that the Doctor€™s team to rescue Amy from Demons Run was entirely made up of new or very recent characters. The oldest character to take part in the rescue (not counting Rory or the Judoon) was Spitfire pilot Danny Boy who was first seen in Series 5€™s Victory Of The Daleks, and three of the main five rescuers (Vastra, Jenny, and Strax) were entirely new characters. But if it wasn€™t for Torchwood, things would have turned out a little differently. Sometime after the episode was broadcast, Steven Moffat revealed that, in the original drafts of the script, Captain Jack Harkness would have been part of the assault team and fought the Headless Monks because "it would be obvious for him (the Doctor) to call upon Jack in those circumstances". He most probably would have died a few times as well. However, John Barrowman was filming Torchwood: Miracle Day at the same time as this episode€™s production block and couldn€™t be released to film Doctor Who. While it€™s not known how much writing Jack out affected the script€™s development, it€™s plausible that his role and early versions of some of his dialogue went to Vastra and Strax. Particularly the discussions about Time Lords and Regeneration. Although you can't always have everything, as consolation prizes go, Miracle Day ranks just below getting Dimensions In Time for the 30th Anniversary instead of the film that was planned.
