Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
18. Voyage Of The Damned
The 2007 Christmas special had everything. The Titanic, in space! Robot Angels! The debut of Bernard Cribbins! Kylie! Even a cameo from the Queen (sort of)!
The plot’s nothing particularly groundbreaking – if you've seen literally any disaster movie, you've seen this episode. Still, handling such a large cast in 60 minutes is no mean feat, and the gradual whittling down of the group is skilfully done.
The most heartbreaking death is Astrid’s, whose sacrifice, and hologram farewell, are genuinely affecting. The Doctor’s brief romance with her is peak cringey romantic Tennant… but it does admittedly work.
It’s a real emotional rollercoaster, and when the day is eventually saved it feels like a proper Christmas miracle.
It's just a damn good special through-and-through. And it got modern Doctor Who’s highest-ever viewing figures. 14 million people can’t be wrong!
