Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
17. Lux
Of all RTD’s recent scripts, Lux is easily the most imaginative.
Having the Doctor go up against a living cartoon is a fabulous idea. And thanks to the art team, Alan Cumming’s vocal performance and Murray Gold’s catchy theme song, Mr Ring-a-Ding absolutely fulfilled his potential.
The story is pretty strong too, with a sound logic to both Mr Ring-a-Ding's plan (using the light of the Doctor’s regeneration energy to become 3D) and his downfall.
The thing that lets it down, as is often the case with RTD, is going overboard – in this case that's with the fan stuff.
It's just a very very bizarre sequence that feels like a charity sketch awkwardly wedged into a proper episode. Lux is a cartoonish story that does a brilliant job of taking itself seriously, but for five or ten minutes it devolves into a pantomime joke.
This aside though Lux is enormous fun and perhaps one of the best-designed Doctor Who stories ever. If only RTD2 could've been this bold and original throughout.
