34. The Robot Revolution

Ncuti Gatwa’s second season opener was a definite improvement over his first. But it failed to make much of a lasting impression.

The Robot Revolution’s strongest aspect is its production design. The Missbelindachandrabots and their home planet look absolutely stunning – like something out of a proper Star Wars movie. And the cyborg Alan is genuinely creepy.

The trouble is, beneath the surface it's all a bit flat. It feels like the cold leftovers of Partners in Crime and a much cleverer Steven Moffat timey-wimey plot – it's like the CBBC version of the much sharper script RTD might have written if this was 20 years ago.

Being bland is arguably worse than being utterly horrendous – at least Love & Monsters' atrocious Abzorbaloff scenes gave us something memorable to laugh about.
