The Doctor has adjusted to the fact that the Tardis only does what he wants her to do when she feels like it. Hell tell companions to dress for Las Vegas or Rio, and then take them god knows where. Hes just not as good at piloting the Tardis as he likes to think. He he pretends to take this in his stride so that companions dont know how precarious his control over their travel actually is (remember when he tried to take Rose home).
