Game Of Thrones: 9 Crazy Fan Theories About Tyrion Lannister

He is the god of t*ts & wine, but what else is Tyrion Lannister?

By James Hunt /

Two questions. 1) Who's your favourite Game of Thrones character, and 2) Why is it Tyrion Lannister?

The general consensus is that Tyrion is the best character on the show/in the books, and the reasons are fairly obvious. He's intelligent, cunning, an underdog despite being a member of a hugely rich and powerful house, is a pretty decent person (by Westeros standards), and of course is rather hilarious.

Of all the characters in Game of Thrones, few fates are as concerning as that of Tyrion. Will he ever make it back to Westeros? Is he going to achieve a level of power, or will his kinslaying be the ruin of him. From how important he has been so far, as well as George R.R. Martin stating he's one of the only characters originally envisioned to last the entire saga, it's believed that big things are expected of the dwarf.

While in the short-term his future is very much tied up with Meereen and Daenerys Targaryen, the plans for him longer term are less clear. With such a long gap between books (seriously, George, get a move on), fans have attempted to fill in some gaps with their own theories. Some actually make sense, while others make you think they were drunker than Tyrion at a wedding.

9. He Is The Valonqar

So far, all of Maggy the Frog's prophecies have started to come true. She married the king, and had three children with 'golden crowns', while he had ten-and-six. Two of them have died, and the future doesn't look great for Tommen. There's also a number of contenders for who will be the queen to oust Cersei; you could consider it Margaery, or alternatively Daenerys, or even Sansa. After all that, comes this:

"...The valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you."

Valonqar is High Valyrian for 'little brother', and Cersei spends her whole life believing this to be Tyrion. There are a number of other theories as to who the valonqar will be, ranging from Jaime to Sandor Clegane to one of the Stark girls, but Tyrion is still counted among the favourites should it come to pass. He'd certainly have motive, and experience when it comes to kinslaying, although Jamie would be more poetic, and Sandor more fun. If it is Tyrion, then at least this rather excellent threat will have been made good:

"I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid.”
