Gotham returned to screens for its final season earlier this month, and things got off to an explosive start as Gordon, Bullock and the rest of the GCPD tried to salvage what was left of their once great city, after Jeremiah Valeska isolated Gotham from the rest of the world.

With few episodes left before the Fox series reaches its conclusion, there's a lot to look forward to, including the re-appearance of Jeremiah, who's been MIA since Season 5 commenced. However, if actor Cameron Monaghan's words are anything to go by, then we might have an even bigger surprise in store in Gotham's final episode.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Monaghan not only discussed his character Jeremiah, but also announced that he's set to play a third character in the series finale. When asked which of his two previous characters was more fun to play, he revealed:

"I most enjoyed playing is the one in the final episode that we haven’t seen yet."

With Gotham set to take a time-jump in the series finale, it's hard not to speculate about the identity of this mysterious character and whether or not it could be The Joker. It's no secret that Gotham has been unable to use the character in the past - hence why neither Jerome nor Jeremiah were ever referred to as The Joker, despite their evident similarities to the comic book character.

However, this may no longer be the case, as Monaghan also suggested an appearance from some of Batman's most notable characters in Gotham's finale:

"I will say we’ve been given certain liberties in this final season that we haven’t been given before that’s going to make itself pretty apparent as you watch it. All I’ll say is when you have an episode that’s a full-on Batman episode running around in the future, you’re going to have characters that you’ll expect to see."

While fans are no doubt looking forward to Monaghan reprising his role as Jeremiah in this final season, the mere prospect of the Shameless actor making an appearance as the actual Joker is rather spine-tingling.

Monaghan has been utterly sublime as both Jerome and Jeremiah, and many fans consider him to be one of the greatest on-screen Jokers we've has thus far, so seeing him in action as The Clown Prince Of Crime - even just for a single episode - would be incredibly rewarding.
