Star Trek: Every Starfleet Uniform Ranked From WORST To BEST

62. Starfleet Standard Uniform - Mid 2270s

This futuristic uniform was designed for The Motion Picture by Robert Fletcher, as previous designer William Ware Theiss was unavailable to work on the film. Fletcher began the process by imagining a series of uniforms that were 'less sexist' than their '60s counterparts, according to The Making Of Star Trek The Motion Picture by Susan Sackett and Gene Roddenberry.

Fletcher created a design that connected the shoes to the overall suit, thus creating a seamless lower half. The one-piece variant was challenging to put on and remove, with George Takei recalling that even a trip to the bathroom needed help.

While most of the crew wore the single jumpsuit, several two-piece versions were created for the primary cast. Colours like powder blue, beige, brown, and white denoted the various departments. There were further variations, with some of them having open collars, while others closed the collar. Medical staff were offered more traditional lab coats, while Starbase operatives wore a more relaxed, loose-fitting uniform.

All of these uniforms were outfitted with a 'perscan' device, patented by Fletcher, that would continuously update the main computer as to the wearer's vitals. These uniforms were not popular with the cast.
