Star Trek: Every Starfleet Uniform Ranked From WORST To BEST

49. The Cage - Early 2250s Dress Uniform

In the illusion created by the Talosians in The Cage, Captain Pike watches an Orion Slave Girl dance before him and two other Starfleet officers. One of these officers is wearing the first on-screen depiction of a Starfleet Dress Uniform.

This variation was an overcoat, worn on top of the standard duty uniform. It was brownish-green, bore the Starfleet Delta on the left breast, and was adorned with epaulets on the shoulders.

The script for The Cage indicated that this uniform was created to highlight that the officer in question was not from the Enterprise. Although the differing Deltas had yet to make an appearance, this is an early indicator that various uniforms were in service across Starfleet - a theme that would take on a life of its own as years went on.
