When designing the uniforms for Star Trek, Michael Kaplan was inspired by the Star Trek Encyclopedia, given to him by J.J. Abrams. He wanted to trace the evolution of uniforms through the years, focusing on common themes between them all.

He retained the bright colours - Gold, Blue, and Red - seen in so much of Trek, while adding Delta-themed patterns to each of them. Variations on these uniforms included standard long-sleeved tops, worn over a black undershirt. Thigh-length dresses with a lower-cut neck, also worn over a black undershirt, were worn by female members of the crew.

Medical staff had optional tunics in a light blue colour, with both long and short sleeve variants. The long-sleeved uniforms also bore the rank insignia of the wearer on the sleeve cuff, much like their Prime Universe counterparts.
