Star Trek: Every Starfleet Uniform Ranked From WORST To BEST

40. Standard Duty Uniform - One Piece - Late 2340s/Early 2360s

William Ware Theiss returned to Star Trek to design the uniforms that were introduced in Encounter At Farpoint. These one-piece uniforms were a departure from the double-breasted Monster Maroons of the films, dropping the straps and undershirts, moving the rank insignia to the right collar, and redesigning the Delta - now a communicator - on the left breast.

These uniforms were designed to be wrinkle-free (i.e. too small for the wearer), which quickly made them uncomfortable to wear. They were dropped from use by the main cast of The Next Generation by the beginning of the third season.

Chronologically, they were in use by 2353 and can be seen in Picard's flashback aboard the USS Stargazer, as well as his vision of seeing Jack Crusher's body. As Jack was seen in a Monster Maroon in a holographic recording to his son made in 2349, the switch must have happened relatively quickly after this.

The uniform was also used in the Kelvin timeline as late as 2379, as seen in the holographic recording of Lieutenant Yor, though that variant had (depending on the source) a communicator more commonly used in the 2360s in the Prime Universe.

Outside of archival footage, the uniform was phased out by The Next Generation's fourth season.
