29. Engineering Work Suit - Mid 2270s/Late 2290s

Though featured prominently in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, the engineering jumpsuit was introduced in the mid-2270s, during the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Costume designer Robert Fletcher opined in the February 1980 issue of Fantastic Films that:

After all, a mechanic doesn't work in a suit and tie, so why should engineers on a starship?

Fletcher designed these uniforms to suit the work that Scotty and the rest of the team would do in engineering, protecting them from harmful elements, while providing ample storage for the tools of the trade. 

They may have been bulky, but they were designed for function rather than fashion. To be fair to Fletcher, Spock only donned the gloves when he entered that chamber. Perhaps he should have taken the time to wear the whole outfit.
