Star Trek: Every Starfleet Uniform Ranked From WORST To BEST

9. Starfleet Standard Two-Piece Uniform - Mid 2230s - 2250s

Star Trek: Discovery introduced several uniform variants in its debut season, including those shown first aboard the USS Shenzhou. Designed by Gersha Phillips, these uniforms were a departure from those seen in The Original Series and beyond.

Bryan Fuller's original idea for Discovery would have been closer to the uniforms seen aboard the Enterprise in the 2260s, but Phillips believed that those uniforms didn't 'resonate' in the modern day. She incorporated contemporary designs into these uniforms, something that both made life easier and added new challenges.

She described each uniform as being perfectly fitted to each performer, including the outerwear seen most often, and the underwear saved for more personal scenes. Division colours were once again updated, though Command remained gold. Silver and copper were used for the Science and Operations divisions.

Captain's uniforms differed by adding additional slim piping between the shoulder and asymmetrical neck (a Fuller-mandated design choice, though Phillips was hired after Fuller's departure).

This uniform came with many variants. Flag Officers, Starbase Officers, specialised Science Officers, and prisoners all had their versions of the uniform, while away teams were given tactical vests to wear over their chests to deflect most weapons (Klingon Mek'Leths were seemingly unavailable for testing).

Skants, worn over shorts, with high boots, were also an option on board the Shenzhou and the Discovery. Unlike later uniforms, the rank insignia was displayed on Starfleet Delta, still worn on the left breast. A new Cadet-level Delta was seen in Discovery, most often worn by then-Cadet Sylvia Tilly.
