3. Rowdy Crowds Are Ruining Wrestling

This particular complaint is especially pronounced during WWE’s annual post-WrestleMania fallout, or whenever the company visits cities like Chicago or Philadelphia. Such shows tend to attract a louder, rowdier crowd than the usual, and whether through endless “CM Punk” chants or Mexican waves and beach balls, these fans always find a way to agitate big portions of the fanbase.

The main argument is that these crowds are only there to put themselves over, and that their actions are disrespectful to the performers. There’s a slight element of truth to this, but policing crowd reactions is impossible, and aside from raising the ire of the most uptight sections of the audience, crowds like this do more to enhance the action that detract from it.

Wrestling is built around audience interaction, and different groups of people will react to certain situations in different ways. Without the fans, there wouldn’t be an industry, and somebody who has paid for their ticket has the right to create an atmosphere in any way they see fit, so long as it’s not outwardly offensive. Telling rowdier crowds to calm down is essentially telling them to stop having fun, and expecting everyone to behave the same way at a wrestling show is not only unrealistic, but totalitarian.
