The 6 December 2019 episode of SmackDown (and all of that dog food stuff) told Roman Reigns one thing: WWE's creative team didn't have a clue what it was doing, or how to present him as a sympathetic character. So, as revealed by Paul Heyman during interviews, the future 'Tribal Chief' decided to take matters into his own hands.

Roman's sabbatical due to health concerns before WrestleMania 36 helped too. WWE were forced to hit pause on Reigns' babyface run, and he convinced them he'd be better off as an elitist heel once he returned. At SummerSlam 2020, Roman roared back into view then aligned with Heyman on the following TV.

This story will be interesting to anybody who figured Reigns was a WWE robot who'd mindlessly do anything they wanted him to. At times, that's what it looked like, but he was clearly unhappy with the creative process and pushed for meaningful change. Better yet, Roman had the influence to make that a reality.
