Originally, the plan didn't call for The British Bulldog to win the WWF Intercontinental Title at SummerSlam 1992. Vince McMahon was undecided over hosting the event at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Instead, there were discussions held over holding the show in Washington, D.C. If that had been the case, Bret Hart would have defended the belt against Shawn Michaels in a Ladder Match. When the WWF did go ahead with London as the host city, the bout between Hart and Davey Boy Smith still almost didn't happen. Smith had suffered a staph infection, meaning he couldn't wrestle for most of the Summer months. By the time SummerSlam '92 rolled around, he was ill-prepared to contest a main event match against Hart for the Intercontinental Title. Nonetheless, Bulldog won the match and thus the title. A few months later, he was fired by McMahon for receiving shipments of Human Growth Hormone, which went against the no-drug policy in the promotion at the time. Winning the Intercontinental Title should have been a huge moment for Smith, but it indirectly led to him being sacked by the WWF.
