8. Braun Strowman (2018)

Unlike WWE's other hammered-home pushes of the millennium, Braun Strowman actually remained universally popular, even after Vince McMahon forced him and his p*ss-stained cargo pants down your throat. There wasn't much competition, to be fair, because WWE's other forced pushes, like John Cena and Roman Reigns, were booked to win and win and win, while Braun got to flip ambulances. What sugar-fuelled child or nostalgic adult wouldn't get behind that?

That level of soaring popularity made Strowman the right pick to win the Money in the Bank contract in 2018, a match he won after slamming Kevin Owens off the top of the highest ladder.

The issue is that WWE reunited the even-more-popular Shield the night after SummerSlam, preventing Braun from cashing in on Roman Reigns and triggering an impulsive heel turn from 'The Monster Among Men'. Braun's actual cash-in was in a Hell in a Cell match at the titular pay-per-view, which he announced ahead of time and which ended in a no contest after Brock Lesnar gnawed the door off its hinges and F5'ed both.

Later, Roman solemnly relinquished the Universal Title due to a return fight with leukaemia, and Braun was booked against Brock for the vacant belt at Crown Jewel...but WWE went with Lesnar. Again.
