10 Times WWE Totally WASTED Money In The Bank
4. Brock Lesnar (2019)
Controversy creates cash, so said former WCW Executive Vice President Eric Bischoff, but controversy for the sake of controversy isn't good publicity.
It didn't stop WWE in 2019, though: in his first appearance since being Stomped by Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 35, Brock Lesnar stampeded to the ring, swiped Ali off a ladder, and stole the briefcase. It was WWE at its creative lowest, breaking the glass in case of emergency because they'd forgotten to suitably build up a challenger for Rollins' Universal Title in time for SummerSlam.
As deflating as it was to see WWE favouring its usual suspects yet again, a shock Lesnar win maybe wouldn't have been so bad ,had WWE's original plans not been leaked. As recently as the entrances for the match were in full swing, Ali was planned to become Mr Money in the Bank before Vince McMahon pulled him aside. At least he knew the plan; nobody else was informed. All they knew was that Sami Zayn's replacement would be toppling an Ali-climbed ladder, but it could have been anyone as far as they were concerned. Before that, though, Vince was backing Drew McIntyre, which would have actually lit a fire in a creatively barren WWE.
Alas, McIntyre's redemption as 'The Chosen One' would have to wait another eleven months while WWE picked up its raggedy old toy Brock Lesnar for the umpteenth time.
