The very first episode of Monday Nitro remains a landmark moments in the history of World Championship Wrestling. On the broadcast, fans were treated to a special bout between Brian Pillman and Jushin 'Thunder' Liger. In addition, Ric Flair battled Sting, and one top WWF star made a welcome reappearance on WCW television. Lex Luger had been struggling to maintain his top line status in the WWF for a while, but he instantly came across as a huge deal when he strolled out on Nitro. To their credit, WCW's announcers treated Luger's arrival like the second coming, and reasoned that he must be there to challenge for Hulk Hogan's World Title. Naturally, he was, and both men had a staredown as the show went off the air. Immediately, people watching were hooked on Nitro. It was live, something Monday Night Raw normally wasn't, and set the tone for what WCW wanted fans to think. Nitro was the place to be for shocking incidents and killer matches.
