25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2020
16. The “Wyatt Swamp Fight”
Those who watched it at the time know all too well what a trip the Horror Show At Extreme Rules was. Again, like with many ideas from 2020, WWE were trying to 'think outside of the box' and present something a little different for fans stuck at home. If company booking was a Monopoly board, then they landed on 'cinematic matches' at every turn.
Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman dipped back into their shared past for Extreme Rules. Wyatt cut his usual cryptic, meandering promos (which are still being used by Uncle Howdy and The Wyatt Sicks on episodes of SmackDown today), then he invited Braun to meet him in a bespoke 'Swamp Fight'.
Bring your best wellies, big man.
It turned out to be one of the worst cinematic bouts of the era by a mile. WWE produced it like a homage to 1990s children's TV scare series Goosebumps, but they hoped the storytelling lore between these ex-Wyatt Family members would carry things through. If wishes were fishes, eh? Speaking of which, both guys almost ended up with a few swimmers stuck in their ring gear as they traded blows in the bayou water.
Roman Reigns returned at SummerSlam the following month to vastly improve WWE's main event scene overnight. His realistic work as the 'Tribal Chief' collided with the cartoonish 'Swamp' nonsense happening in July. Taking a break from Bray's 'Fiend' offshoot for this cult-like throwback was a poor decision by the writers.
All of that planning and cinematography just wasn't worth the effort.
