25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2020
15. Matt Hardy Teleports
Matt Hardy was one of the earlier 'second wave' leaps from WWE to AEW. His debut on the 18 March 2020 edition of Dynamite as The Elite's surprise bid to even the odds vs. The Inner Circle at 'Blood & Guts' got everyone in the wrestling world talking. Matt's 'Broken' character was back, and he'd surely soar under Tony Khan's watch.
Or not.
Khan would later admit during an interview for 'Talk Is Jericho' that he regretted what happened next on the 25 March flagship. There, Hardy literally teleported around Daily's Place to get right up in Chris Jericho's face. It was hokey, it was over the top, and it kinda made a mockery of the gratuitous violence that was set to come on 'Blood & Guts'.
Sure, it was the closed door era and madcap booking was the general rule, but Matt's teleportation act just didn't fit in with what AEW had been doing up until that point. They'd been going for a more plausible approach (for the most part) that felt old school and akin to an NWA territory with modern in-ring action and superior production.
Cue Hardy floating around venues as Jericho acted like he was seeing a ghost. It was an odd fit for AEW that clowned Khan's comments about being an alternative to WWE. If anything, Tony was falling into the same trap as his competition. This was the kind of thing latter day Vinnie Mac would've signed off on, and everyone knew it.
The teleportation segment was rightly derided afterwards.
