25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2023
5. Gable Steveson Flops
The signing of Gable Steveson made a lot of sense on the surface. After he'd won a gold medal for the USA in the 2020 Olympics over in Japan, there was sound logic in WWE looking at someone with his look and base set of skills. Believing they could turn him into a pro wrestler wasn't ridiculous.
As time rolled on, it seemed more and more as though that was unlikely to be the case.
Gable was signed to WWE just a few weeks after appearing at SummerSlam 2021. In October, it was announced that he'd be part of the Raw roster as part of that year's Draft. Following a handful of appearances, Steveson would be quietly moved to NXT and didn't appear in a match until facing Baron Corbin at the Great American Bash in 2023.
Fans quickly understood why.
Gable was woefully out of his depth. He lacked any of the poise, technique or natural charisma that WWE would have been trying to instil in him for the better part of 2 years. The match with Corbin was an absolute disaster, as fans booed Steveson (the face in the match), then booed louder at the match ending in a double countout. This was the only televised match of Gable's 3 years with WWE, and he was eventually let go in May 2024.
