25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2023
24. John Cena Can't Elevate Austin Theory
For all of the deserved praise that 'Mania 39 receives, it speaks volumes that John Cena's penultimate match on the PLE is so easily forgettable. One of the biggest superstars in WWE history took to the ring in the opening bout of the weekend in an attempt to help Austin Theory improve his credibility with fans and casuals alike, and become United States Champ.
Vince McMahon's adoration of Theory is well documented. With WWE's former owner barely out of the picture as this 'Mania arrived, there was always going to be some lingering creative from his time in charge. As was shown in the run-up to their WrestleMania match, Theory was several thousand miles away from being able to hang in a program with an all-time great like Cena.
Their match was bland.
Cena's in-ring work had deteriorated, and the audience just didn't care enough about Austin for this to feel like a major happening. Theory is one of just a handful of men to hold a singles victory over Cena at the 'Showcase Of The Immortals but have nothing to show for it. In 2026, WWE is still trying to find a way to make fans invest in him, and there isn't even the slightest sign in the company's fandom that suggests it's ever going to happen for the guy.
