DOWNS…

4. Stunt For Stunt’s Sake

Matches like Money in the Bank are ripe for crazy, nonsensical spots that we’d never see in any other wrestling match. It’s just a fact of life that most fans have to accept at this point.

Building a ladder bridge between the ring and announcer’s desk that serves no purpose until someone goes through it? Sure. Setting up a ladder on the ropes as a “stabilizer” for the main ladder? Why not?

But we’ve got to ding the spot with Je’Von Evans and the obscenely tall ladder that existed only to launch him through the roof of the ambulance.

It was a fantastic-looking bump and probably sucked to take, so it’s tough to criticize him for it, but the setup was immersion-breaking. The ladder was set up about two feet from the ropes, nowhere near the center of the ring, making it impossible to reach the briefcase. But there was Evans, climbing it nonetheless, looking like a fool when he got up there and “realized” he couldn’t reach the case.

Then Bron Breakker shoved the ladder over, sending Je’Von hurtling through the ambulance roof, with the cardboard popping up as he crashed down.

None of this is to diminish the spot or the risk, but the setup was beyond obvious, and all it did was make Evans look like a goof because he was nowhere near a spot to win. The only thing he could do from that position was get knocked through the ambulance roof.
