9 Things SummerSlam Must Do To Eclipse NXT Brooklyn
4. A Win For Nakamura
This Sunday, Jinder Mahal will defend the WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura at SummerSlam. Just a year or two ago, a sentence like that would have been difficult to believe, and yet today it’s very much the headlining bout of the entire SmackDown brand.
After a brisk rise to the top, Mahal has admittedly improved since being crowned WWE Champion, but his reign is still hindered by the fact that most people recognise it as WWE’s play for the Indian market. When titles are so blatantly used strategically like that, it kind of makes it difficult to suspend your disbelief and really get invested in the reign.
So why not shake things up entirely, and actually have Nakamura beat Mahal and become the first officially-recognised Japanese WWE Champion? Not only would the result be far more satisfying than a successful defense for Mahal, but it would show the company is finally ready to use Nakamura as he should be.
Some may still say that it’s too soon to can this whole "India experiment", but the counterargument to that is that there would have been better ways to penetrate a market than with a totally out-of-the-blue title reign.
