34. Sgt. Slaughter vs Hulk Hogan (WrestleMania 7)
Poor Sgt. Slaughter. In 1991, with America in military conflict with Iraq as part of the ongoing Gulf War, Vince McMahon decided that it was time to embrace the zeitgeist and ask Slaughter to turn heel as an Iraqi sympathizer. It was distasteful and crass, but Slaughter played the role to perfection, winning the WWE Championship from The Ultimate Warrior at the 1991 Royal Rumble.
The angle of Hulk Hogan bringing down Saddam Hussein's ally in the main event of WrestleMania was proving a difficult pill for fans to swallow too. WrestleMania 7 had been downscaled in size due to poor ticket sales, as Hulk Hogan's run at the top of WWE began to slowly lose its appeal with fans.
Nevertheless, Hogan was painted as the all-American hero, here to take down Slaughter in the name of Uncle Sam. The ring ropes were red, white, and blue, every poster advertising the event was draped in the stars and stripes, and the stage was set for 'The Hulkster' to save the day. 'Real American' never felt more appropriate as Hogan reclaimed the WWE Championship, and enforced patriotism ran wild on us all.
