The WORST Moment From EVERY WWE SummerSlam
12. Nikki Bella’s Lame Duck Heel Turn (2014)
Nikki Bella turned on her sister Brie to help Stephanie McMahon win a showdown nobody asked for at SummerSlam 2014. Listen, these women are only guilty of trying their best with the whole thing, but there was nobody to carry this into passable territory; Stephanie was never a worker outside select things like the ‘Mania 34 mixed tag, and Brie has been working largely the same match her entire career.
If anything, it's remarkable that this ended up as slick as it was (and it wasn't very slick).
WWE gave up on Nikki’s heel turn quickly too, thus rendering the whole thing pointless. They went hard and heavy-handed on the storyline for a while, including when Nikki told Brie she'd be happier if she'd never been born at all, but it didn't click with the audience so everyone called it quits. The Bella Twins were back to running "twin magic" in tag-team matches by the end of the year.
So much for that then. This heel turn couldn't have been more half-hearted, man. Also, Stephanie's Pedigree on Brie following Nikki's reveal looked a little wonky. You could definitely file this under 'Matches WWE Fans Didn't Ask For (But Got Anyway)'. The company seemed determined to go with their Bella split story.
It's always baffling when creative types book something without a coherent plan for it afterwards. One could almost see the puzzled looks on everyone's faces as they looked over to Vince McMahon and asked, 'What now, boss?'. He didn't know. He really didn't know.
