Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Great (Canon) Books To Read While You Wait

Did you know that The Clone Wars got its REAL finale in print?

If, like me, you spent April's Celebration month curled up on your sofa, freaking out over the numerous panels, cosplayers and trailers that graced Star Wars’ foremost event, then you’re probably feeling a tad upset that the whole thing came to a close so soon. It seems as though just as the trailers for The Last Jedi and Battlefront II debuted, the doors were shut on Celebration Orlando. And, like it or not, there’s still a hefty five month wait for the year’s next adventure in a galaxy far, far away. Quite the bummer.

It’s not all doom and gloom however. Though it’s only been about three years since Lucasfilm started re-expanding the Expanded Universe (much to the chagrin of those ol' 'Legends Never Die' folks), fans are now in the very fortuitous position of being able to sample a whole host of new Star Wars literature, and yes, all of it is canon. Indeed, Disney can now boast a vast bibliography of Star Wars stories, with writers tackling everything from shadowy Clone Wars conspiracies to nuanced character studies of some of the franchise’s most overlooked heroes and villains. It is, in many ways, a resurgent period for Star Wars on print.

But what should you really be checking out in the run up to Episode VIII? With so many stories to choose from, things can get a little overwhelming. Fret not however, because we've got you covered with a whole heap of recommendations to make this Star Wars-less period just that little bit more bearable.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
