10 Incredible Batman Comics (That Don't Star Bruce Wayne)

9. Batman And The Outsiders (v2)

Gotham Central 1
DC Comics

There’s the semi-famous cover of the very first Batman and the Outsiders, where Batman tells the Justice League to shove it so he can team up with some new partners, but while that run was pretty good, we are talking about a team that started before Batman even got involved.

This team formed in the wake of the miniseries Teen Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day, which saw the disassembling of the Titans team. However, Roy Harper talked a very broody Dick Grayson into creating a new team - this one not having the familiar bonds of the Titans, so there could be no heartbreak if they died or left. That doesn’t exactly go as planned over the four year run of the team between 2003 and 2007, but it was a great book that really carried over aspects of the Titans while feeling like a natural progression for the characters involved.

All that changed, however, when the title was relaunched as Batman and the Outsiders in 2007, with the eponymous Dark Knight in question taking over as leader. You’d think with the name change that this would be a Bruce Wayne-centric book but Chuck Dixon keeps the focus on The Outsiders, as Batman comes off more like that coach no one likes in primary school. Batman held try-outs, cut long-time members, and basically made them his black ops team. It was incredible in its own right, but having Batman be the counterpoint to the team just made it a fantastic Batbook as well.
