Contrary to what all the doomsayers keep proclaiming, the comics industry continues to be great. Buoyed by efforts in other media, the Big Two (Marvel and DC), as well as other publishers such as Image and IDW, are all publishing some of the most entertaining comic book stories in recent memory. 2018 was great, but 2019 looks as though it could be even better.

We're only halfway through the year, but there is literally so much on the shelves right now that could be described as unmissable. Whether a series is in its burgeoning moments or is coming to a conclusion years-long in the making, you don't have to look far to see that the comics medium continues to push boundaries, both visually and narratively speaking.

It's actually more difficult not to gush over the efforts of Marvel and DC's creators than it is to simply just let it happen. There are so many reasons to be positive when both publishers are producing so much quality content, to the point where the only gripes currently are that A: EVERYTHING IS SO EXPENSIVE OH GOD (ahem), and B; no one could possibly hope to read every book at once.

But that's where we come in. Because while you might not be able to read every comic, you can pick out a select few, and if you miss them the first time, there are always trades to look forward to!

So, from gun-toting assassins to new perspectives on classic heroes, here are the Marvel and DC books fans have to read in 2019.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
