It was announced this morning by DC Comics that Smallville will be returning for an 11th Season in printed form rather than as a live action television series. This is great news for fans of the long running show who were distraught with news it was coming to an end, and for those of us who have been longing to see how Clark Kent is coping in his new identity as Superman.
Written by Bryan Q Miller, a former staff writer on the show, the series promises to pick up six months after the events of the finale. The series will launch digitally on April 13th 2012 with new chapters being released each week following its debut. The series will then be collected and released in printed format on May 16th, presumably as monthly comic book issues.
As a fan of the show and of the Superman character I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my 10 wishes for Season 11 of Smallville.
10. No More Green Arrow
I was never a fan of this character becoming a series regular on the show. Sure I enjoyed the occasional Justice League episode here and there, especially ‘Run’ and ‘Justice’ but allowing the Green Arrow to become a regular recurring character on the show diluted Clark’s journey. Why move to Metropolis, become a reporter and don a suit to protect the city when Oliver Queen is there and doing a pretty good job of it?
Oliver belongs in Star City, not Metropolis. Let’s be honest he was probably added to the cast as per request from the CW who wanted a character who would constantly take his shirt off just to appeal to the young female audience. Seeing as how this is going to be a DC publication with no involvement from the CW this no longer applies, therefore I see no reason for another superhero (who outside of this show has never really been closely associated with Superman) to share the spotlight with Clark.
Please get rid of him for series 11. If however Bryan Q Miller must insist on bringing more heroes into this mix please let them belong to the Superman Family as opposed to the Justice League- which leads me to my next point.
9. Drop in on Kara and Conor
Kara and Conor are vital to Clark’s life. He served as family and mentor to both Supergirl and Superboy. The show ended with Conor living on the farm with Martha and enrolling in Smallville High whilst Kara slipped on a Legion ring at Jor-El’s request and was presumably transported to the 31st Century. I think it would be great to see these two characters get separate stand alone stories.
It would be lovely idea to get a Kara or Conor story as filler in between the big story arcs with Season 11. They don’t even need to intertwine or interact with Clark’s plot. I would love to see Kara join the Legion and finally find her place among Brainiac 5, Rokk, Imra and Garth. It would also be great to see Conor come to terms with life in Smallville High, hopefully we may even see some old faces return like Principal Reynolds, Zoe and Clayton with their viral Wall of Weird and Greg Arkin who I’d like to see become a guidance counsellor in the school for students affected by the second meteor shower. Kara and Conor are both important parts of Clark’s life, more so than Oliver Queen so I hope that they will get the stories and credit they deserve in the new season, ideally like I said as stand alone filler issues.
8. Lois & Clark’s 7 Year Wait
While Lois Lane and Clark Kent understandably did not wed in the Finale given Darkseid’s arrival on Earth, it was less understandable that they would have to wait seven years until they could finally tie the knot. It was a strange decision to place the flash forward scene at the end of the show 7 years in the future. Perhaps it was to accommodate for the fact that Chloe and Oliver have a son and that Lex is running for President but why on Earth were Lois and Clark not happily married by that stage? This may have to be retconned in the comic.
One of my favourite aspects of the show was their depiction of Lois and Clark’s relationship. The writers knew how essential the characters were for each other and Tom Welling and Erica Durance had a great chemistry as the famous duo. I hope that Miller doesn’t tie himself down with the fact that it took them such a long time to get married. If he sticks to this future plot point then does that mean that we’re in for a few years of Lois and Clark being on again/off again? Or worse- frog eating Lois clones? It can easily be fixed by having the couple marry early on in Season 11 and then claim that in the flash forward of the finale they were simply renewing their vows. Please don’t ruin their relationship. Let them get on with it and become a happily married couple.
7. Lex Luthor’s Rise to Power
It was foreshadowed in the finale that Lex Luthor would soon return to power and the family business of Luthorcorp would, like it’s owner, ascend from the ashes and become LexCorp (which should be familiar to comic fans). I’d imagine that the rise of Lex’s company may be swept under the rug by Miller which would be a tragic mistake. Smallville was notorious for allowing story details to slip through massive plot holes, I think that Lex’s return to power would be a fantastic subplot in the new comic.
Lex Luthor was pronounced dead to the world in Season 8, surely his miraculous resurrection would raise many eyebrows in Metropolis. The writers of the show dropped the ball with a similar plot in season 10 when a Lionel from another dimension took over the deceased Lionel’s chair in LuthorCorp. They never properly addressed how he reintegrated into a society that believed him to be dead. It would have been very interesting to see how he managed to do all of this so successfully without causing a stir. I hope that Bryan Miller sees fit to address such a major issue as Lex returning from the dead.
6. Returning Heroes & Villains From the Superman Universe
And no I don’t mean the Justice League. Now that the story will be continuing in comic book form as opposed to live action we can see old favourites return to the series seeing as how we can bypass pesky contracts and scheduling issues for actors. Most importantly we are getting Lex Luthor back. I’m over the moon with this, the character was a very important part of the show and it will be great to see him back in Metropolis causing grief for Lois and Clark. In terms of heroes I’d much rather see Pete Ross, Emil Hamilton, Dan Turpin and Maggie Sawyer return to the series before any member of the Justice League. This is a Superman story now so let’s keep it that way.
I’d also love to see Brainiac return. He was one the shows most interesting and intelligent villains. He had a huge fan following and I’m sure nobody would refuse another appearance from him.I’d love to see how he would react to Clark finally accepting his Kryptonian heritage. Throughout season 5 of the show Brainiac was hell-bent on releasing Zod from the Phantom Zone. Since then we have had a Zod clone arrive in Smallville only to be vanquished to the Phantom Zone eventually. Presumably the show’s declining budget meant that the writers were never able to afford to team James Marsters and Callum Blue together for a Brainiac/Zod team up. However, now the stage is set story wise for this to come to fruition. I would love to see the pair take over Metropolis and even turn the public against Superman. We may even see Darkseid return in his intended form instead of a possessed Lionel Luthor to get revenge on Clark for defeating him in the finale. Lets also see Metallo, Mxyzptlk and Toyman return to wreck havoc on Clark’s new life. Oh, and it would also be very interesting to see Bizarro come back somehow. I’d love to see his reaction to the fact that Clark is now wearing tights and flying around Metropolis.
5. Perry White… Meet Jimmy Olsen
One of the most enjoyable guest stars to appear on the show throughout it’s 10 year run was Michael McKean with his fantastic portrayal of Perry White. Although he only appeared in two episodes (I’m not counting his voiceover in the finale) he made a lasting impression on both the character and the show. He bounced of Tom Welling and Erica Durance so much that it’s a shame he was never used on a more regular basis. I hope that season 11 won’t waste any time in bringing him back into the fold.
Now that Clark will be spending most of his time in the sky protecting Metropolis it would be wonderful to Lois spend her time at the Daily Planet building upon her friendship with Perry. I’d really like to see his climb up the ladder from fellow journalist to editor in chief of the paper. Another classic character from the mythos that got a rough deal on the show was Jimmy Olsen. The ‘Henry’ plot was a cop out, thankfully though they brought Aaron Ashmore back for the finale as the ‘real’ Jimmy. Sure, Season 11 takes place 6 months after the events of the Finale which would mean that Jimmy would be at least 10 years old but screw it, skip over that fact, it’s a sore point among fans. We love Jimmy Olsen and we want him back in the Planet where he belongs so here’s hoping it won’t be long until we see him again and hopefully it will mean we can see his first encounter with Perry.
4. Lana
She may have a devise character among fans, for years Smallville forums were ablaze with debates over whether she should stay or go. In 2009 those who couldn’t stick her got their wish. In the season 8 episode ‘Requim’ Lana Lang finally left Smallville unfortunately her departure left a lot to be desired. Armed with a nano-suit made from Alien DNA, Lana absorbed a ton of Kryptonite and became lethal for Clark to be around. She was forced to leave Clark for good, staying with him may have killed him. It was a silly storyline and far removed from her heartbreaking goodbye in season 7 episode ‘Arctic’ where she left Clark after accepting the fact that the world needed him more than she did.
That was far more fitting for both her character and her relationship with Clark. Having her leave the show as a superhero who radiated Kryptonite was very disappointing and raised a lot of questions. Here’s hoping that she will make an appearance in Season 11 and free herself from that stupid power suit. I’d also like to see her congratulate Clark on his engagement with Lois and have the former lovers become good friends who can confide in each other.
3. Parental Guidance
A key element to the success of Smallville was in the way it portrayed the Kents. Making them younger and more relatable was an inspired move and the perfect casting of John Schneider and Annette O’ Toole was essential in making the audience understand that Superman is who he is not because of tragedy or loss but because of the way that he was raised. I always loved their speeches to Clark and the fact that he could always come to them with whatever problems he was having.
Unfortunately it seems these days that DC Comics has no clue about what makes Superman such a fantastic character by having killed off both of the Kents in the New 52. It’s a shame but it’s also incentive for the Smallville comic book to make sure that they include Martha in substantial role. Occasional flashbacks to Clarks time on the farm with Jonathon would also be nice, or even some more graveside chats at his tombstone would be welcome. The Smallville comic may well be the last time we see Clark interact with his adoptive family whilst wearing the cape so I think it’s vital that he should come back to Smallville every now and again to see Martha and ask for her sage advice.
2. Lex’s Memories
I hated the fact that Lex Luthor lost his memories at the end of the finale. It was such a cop out. For years we’ve followed his story from hero to villain. His story on the show was as important as Clarks. The writers really succeeded in making what was really a two dimensional villain into a hugely sympathetic, complex and engaging character. It was a major feat and Lex was always my favourite character on the show. It took balls for the writers to allow Lex to discover Clark’s secret. It worked really well, Lex was a major player in this series, when he finally discovered that Clark was the traveller and faced off with him in the Fortress it carried great weight and really cemented this version of Lex as the definitive take on the character.
It was his seven years in Smallville that shaped him into the tragic villain that he became. Clark’s hesitancy in trusting him really pushed him over the edge, it was a wonderful reason behind their rivalry. I was so disappointed to see the writers double back in the finale and give him amnesia. It makes no sense. If he has no memories of Clark, Lionel, Jonathon, Lana, Helen Bryce, then he really has no reason to be a villain. I have a horrible feeling that this won’t be addressed and that Miller will simply start Lex’s arc in season 11 with him being a fully fledged villain who just doesn’t know that Clark is Superman. I love the fact that Lex knew Clark’s secret in Smallville. It adds so much more weight and complexity to their relationship. Please Bryan Q Miller - make sure that Lex retrieves his memories sooner rather than later and I mean ALL his memories. Don’t cop out on us again by having him regain everything apart from Clark’s secret.
1. Superman in Action
One of the biggest issues with the finale of the show was that we were cheated out of seeing Tom Welling in the suit saving the day. After ten years of waiting and spending the entirety of season 10 being constantly teased by the fact that the costume was waiting in the Fortress it will be great to see Clark in the red and blue tights saving the day. Sure we had a few scenes with Superman in the finale but let’s be honest we all felt cheated by the fact that it was a tiny CG figure rather than Tom Welling in the suit. Judging by the promo art for Season 11 it looks like we’ll be seeing Superman in all his glory which is a delight. Another joy o having the story continue in comic form is that there will be no limitations when it comes to action sequences. We can see Superman let rip at villains, use his powers on a more regular basis and best of all, he can fly depending on the situation rather than the budget. It will be very rewarding to see this incarnation of Clark Kent in action as Superman!
Season 11 of Smallville will be released online April 13th and published on May 16th 2012. Can’t wait!

I think this article would have been much better if you had done the appropriate research. A lot of the things you are asking for have been resolved or addressed in the television show itself. such as Brainac no longer being dead (its a different Brainiac anyway). Lana’s character was changed to be literally poisonous to Clark. Having her back would be pointless at worst and arbitrary at best.
Don’t mean to come off as another angry internet ass like I’m sure I do with this, but at the same time, the key to writing is knowing what you’re writing about. This comes off as if you only watched a handful of episodes.
Brainiac no longer being a villain*, that should have read.
I don’t think you read the article properly lad. I know how things ended with Lana, I wrote a paragraph on it, how much I dislike it and why they should redeem her. I also know about Brainiac which is why I talk about the possibilities of bringing him back as a villain and what stories they can do if they go down that path. Read the article fully please!
Can’t say I agree with a couple of these points apologies if this goes into a bit of a ramble, I’ll try to be brief. Some of these points are really treading over topics that has already been dealt with or resolved in the show, with little need to return to that area. Like the Clark and Lois 7 year wait, Lois is a strong independent woman and it fits her personality to not become the ‘ball and chain’ officially, while still showing that level of commitment by being indefinitely engaged. There doesn’t need to be a reason as to why they haven’t gotten hitched, they’re just happy as they are.
Smallville’s Lana almost made me stop watching the show at times; to me she was more of a CW mandate for the Dawson’s Creek crowd than Green Arrow ever could be. Agreed, her send off in Season 7 was far better than the arbitrary conclusion in Season 8. However the decision to force her to leave rather than it be willingly will tarnish any further presence and ruin the Clark/Lois engaged dynamic as it did when she returned in Season 8.
Big point. Having Martha and Jonathan dead in the New 52 is calling back to the original set up for the character when they appeared in 1939 and it’s not a waste of characters as they were still around as he was growing up. Sure guidance from Ma and Pa is great to see but having an adult Clark go back to his parents for help takes my mind back to the dark days of “Lois & Clark” in the 90’s. Any guidance an adult Clark still needs, has been and will be given by Jor-El.
Of course it’s a shame to see all of Lex’s memory wiped but as soon as he discovered who Clark was it was inevitably going to happen. Lex Luthor should never know who Superman is. EVER. The only time a move like that is acceptable is in something like Action Comics #900 where he forgets five minutes later. Let the guy just rise to power and be a rich, power hungry A-hole instead of having the guy stare menacingly at Clark Kent for his entire life.
Also Bryan Q Miller was the shows story editor throughout the last few seasons and is far more than just a staff writer, the book should be in good hands with him on board.
Really sorry that this has become such a ramble, but after watching a show for ten years anyone would build up a strong opinion on it (that and I’m a big Superman nut). All other points on the list were pretty spot on (especially 9, 7, 6 & 1) and I can’t wait for the series to hit in April.
My points are keeping within the specific universe that Smallville has created for the Superman mythology. Within the show Martha has always been vital to Clark and he has just put on the suit- it will ‘Superman Year One’ so to speak so there is always room for Martha to chip in with advice for him every now and again. His relationship with his parents were a major part of the show and it is an element which should still remain to some extent seeing as how Clark is only getting started.
Also while I understand your feelings on Lex I think that it is an waste of the fanastic 10 year build up between him and Clark to just suddenly have him forget everything. The show took a very brave risk in having him play such a huge part in Clark’s life and they stood by it for 10 years only to write it off at the very end. It was a lazy and disappointing move and I personaly would like to see that remedied in Season 11. It would really enrich their conflict to have all those years and experiences behind them.
Miller should stick to the mythology that the show has created and not conform to fan pressure to ditch some of these points because they differ to some of the rules in the comics.
You said it best, with one small additional comment to the 1 part. Yes, there should be Superman action in the comic, obviously. But, the amount that we got in the finale was acceptable to me at least and I know to many many fans. I won’t go into the whole “it was a show about Clark’s journey, not Superman” that one has been played to death. But, the tv series itself is no longer with us, and whether or not there was ever going to be this comic book continuation (I’m going to look at them as two separate forms), I’d just like to look back at it with a happy heart rather than focus on what it didn’t give back to me in the end. And again yes, I have all the faith in the world that Bryan Miller will make us proud.
As a fan of Lana and diehard CLANA I certainly hope her character will be back and shake things up between Lois & Clark. I also hope the artist can capture the beauty of Ms. Kreuk I have longed to see her return to the series and this would be a sort of way to see my wish fulfilled.
Dont count on it
I couldn’t agree more! There are plenty of ways for Clark & Lana to be together again, for them to live the dream of their own existence. They were the perfect couple and Lana’s character, so unique, is the perfect support to a man so powerful, but so sensitive at the same time, so unique as well!
On the other hand the chemistry between them was superb!!!!!! One and only! It reminded me of other well known couples such as Clark Gable & Vivien Leigh (Gone with the wind). It was very hard for me and lots of friends to keep watching after Lana’s forced leaving.
Closing, for those who want to keep the old pattern of Clark & Lois, it’s time to accept that noone ever liked this character matching with Clark Kent/ Superman and more even with ED in this role! I would prefer to see him with Chloe or even Tess than with Lois & especially this Lois. This Lois was so “little” beside such a “huge” (in any meaning) Superman!
Lana!! How I loved her so much. Her and Clark were great together. Made me smile and cry. KK and TW chem was FAR better than the forced one between him and ED.
In fact Clois made me quit the show. Me and my friends dropped it once Lana left. Id love to see her again. Though it sorta ruins her departure where her and clark were forced apart. That was the ONLY way they would have given up on each other. Lois is second choice
I’m sure Lana won’t be in the comic as a regular, so I don’t think you’ll enjoy this comic. She might be back, though I think Clark will be too mature to give up on his fiancee/wife for his ex who he “couldn’t” be with.
Yeah sorry but what a load of bullcrap this is. First off, the whole second choice bullsh*t is fan wanking to ease the pain of the fact Clark freakin’ moved on. And second, if I’ll be honest I found the actors who played Clark and Lana to have no chemistry, it was like watching paint dry most of the times IMO, they were just really awkward together. So apples and oranges here folks, but the second choice stuff is just laughable (seems like its some fangirl jargon).
Clana made me cry too….and not for the right reasons!! Without Lois, Clark would’ve turned into Superbaby not Superman. Both of them being forced apart was the best thing to happen…someone had to save Clark from his own stupidity.
Even though I used to like Lana as a character, I always thought that her relationship with Clark brought the worst in her, and she brought the worst in Clark. The producers said, several times in fact, that the Kryptonite suit was written as a metaphor for a “poisonous” relationship. Their relationship was considered so harmful for both characters that she literally became “poison” to Clark.
I do agree that it was bad written. You can’t just drop a metaphor like this one, and expect people to read your interviews about it to “get” what you meant to say. They should have rather have the characters talk and reach that conclusion themselves. I mean, the last “talk” between Clark and Lana should have been the one to express this thought out loud, with both of them saying, “You know, I really don’t think we never did work together. We were always hurting one another.” That would have been way better than a “metaphor” we were supposed to get.
On that sense, I would love to see Lana back, because I do believe that they could be friends now, and that, as friends, their relationship would work. And it would be nice to see Clark and Lana get the relationship closure they should have gotten in “Requiem” and didn’t.
In the DVD commentary, the creator and producers said Smallville was always about Lana and Kent, no matter what happened at the end. They talked about how smitten they all were with Kristen, year after year, and how Tom was the luckiest man on earth. LOL.
I agree with your article.
However, I won’t be caring much about the Lana situation. As much as I despise the Lana conclusion, I don’t want to see her as a part of Clark life again. However, if there are plans to bring her back, I assume it to be amusing sort. Like in the comic, Lana always fight for Supes’ affection when it’s Lois that Supes cares about. Lana did a lot of things that only embarrass herself to us, readers. Now, that’d be funny. Though, I don’t think Clark would be given much thoughts on her like he used to. *shrugs*
I’m counting on a lot of actions. And I’d like to see Lois doing her thing with Jimmy that would make Clark worry/mad. Can’t wait!
I hate the IDIOTS who support Lana. “Ohh, Lois is second choice”. Horescrap. First love does NOT always equal “true love” and Clark and Lana’s relationship was very sickly and unhealthy.
Yeah agreed, if going by their stupid logic I guess my wife is second choice. I don’t think so folks…
Well said!!! I didn’t mind Clark and Lana at the start but it got old pretty fast and it did no favors for Clark’s character. Lana was holding him back and sucking the life out of him. Her arc in S8 was one of the stupidest plots in TV history. If they need to her bring her back in the comics, they better make Clark man up and tell her to move on from their unhealthy relationship.
I always have to laugh at the ‘Lois is his second choice’ comment. Pretty weak argument. I think Smallville made it very clear, right from the time Lois came to the show, that Lois was his only choice and all other relationships were just practise for the right one.
Kara
Toyman
Legion
Batman
Wonder Woman and Cassandra Sandsmark
illuminati aristocrates and Henri Ducart
Maxwell lord
I’m all for seeing Batman and Wonder Woman… Legion would be great too. But it makes me wonder if DC is going impose restrictions on using certain characters – I hope not because I’d love to see some fresh faces coming in.
Good points with the article. I’d really like to see Bruce and Diana make an appearance but don’t know if there would be restrictions because they have their own franchise. All in all, I’m interested to see what Bryan has in store – I enjoyed reading his Batgirl series so I have high hopes for this Smallville series.
This is a great list! My personal hopes include a huge Clark/Lex confrontation where Lec starts to remember their past and a focus on Lois rising at the Daily Planet after Superman is on the scene. I also agree that Lois and Clark should be married and happy.
And while I’m at it…. I want to finally see this Lois Lane and Superman in their famous embrace above the city.
I always liked the idea that Lex Luthor was only a villan when it came to his hatred of Superman, thats what caused him to do so many terrible things. I think it would be great if he went back to trying to do good things for the world and due to him having a subconcious hatred (due to remnants of his missing memories) he’ll try and stop/kill Superman at any cost.
I agree with you. I’d like to see a complex Lex as well.
i hope Kara is in it and is treated with respect shes Clarks family and the show treated her like she barely mattered to Clark. iam hopeing in the comic they can fix were the show failed.
Id say to the Lana haters that this is Smallville. The only reason why Lois ended up with Clark was because Kristin Kreuk left the series. I hate how fans of the comic book want to shoehorn the same old $hit again and again and again. You have enough old comics and series were Lois & Clark are together. I say to Bryan Q. Miller please give us the Clana shippers the satisfaction. Make this a different reality from the comic books, bring Clark & Lana together, for 8 seasons Smallville’s female lead was Kristin Kreuk, their love was broken up by outside forces, it will be disrespectful to Clana fans to ignore this fact.
Sorry, but Craig from Kryptonite broke the news from Miller himself that the Season 11 comic is not going to expand beyond the 2018 future flash shown in the “Finale” in which Lois and Clark were headed to the altar. Clark displayed their wedding rings and told Lois he had been ready to marry her for 7 years. So you might want to rethink pressing any of the creators to bring Lana back considering the fact that Clark is still set to be with Lois as her husband.
If Lana comes back Clark would have to tell Lana he chooses Lois over her–something viewers already know he did based on several scenes in the final two seasons. “Homecoming,” for example, explicitly set up a scenario in which “Punchbowl Maddie” posed the following question to Lois, which Clark overheard: “You know first love? You never get over it….So you’re the moth, not the flame. Are you sure he even likes you?” Combine this with Lois and Clark’s earlier discussion of how the last time they saw Lana is when she interrupted their dance and kiss at Chloe and Jimmy’s wedding, and Clark was being challenged to prove his love for Lois.
What did Clark do then, you ask? Well, Clark took ALL of that in and decided he wanted to prove once and for all to himself, to Lois, and in a sense to viewers, that he was “over” his “first love.” He did it by recreating the dance Lana ruined and “fixing” it by telling Lois that he loved her (i.e. she was the flame, he was over Lana and sorry he hurt Lois back in “Bride”). The show was VERY clear on this, but there’s more proof for cynics like yourself.
Clark’s also told Lois he’s be with her “always and forever” (Persuasion), she was “the one he always needed” (Salvation), “the one and always will be” (Harvest), the “love of [his] life” who he’d want to marry any time (Fortune). As Clark told Lois his secret, he said there’s “no one else” he’d want “to share his life with” other than her in an episode that set up the idea that if Clark risked his heart to tell Lois his secret it meant she was his “true love” (Isis). In the following episodes, Clark also said he can’t “live in a world where [Lois] doesn’t love him” (Luthor), and he doesn’t “want a day to go by when [he's] not with her” (Ambush). Other than the last statement, Clark’s said ALL of these things to Lois whom Clark said can “always tell when [he's] lying” because she can “see right through [him], straight to his soul, his heart” (the producers said in an interview that this was deliberately written to illustrate that Clark and Lois were soulmates).
Finally, the very essence of Darkseid, who tested Clark’s soul in Season 10 personally and through his minions, is that he can evaluate a person’s very soul for any morsel of doubt about anything. Whenever Clark’s soul was tested, his love for Lois was not in doubt; thus it was true love. Desaad said as much in “Masquerade”–an episode in which Darkseid’s main minion, Desaad, used Clark to tempt Chloe, but could do no such thing with Clark because of the “love in [his] heart.”
Clark got over Lana and he has no desire to be with anyone other than Lois. He’s made his choice crystal clear. The Season 11 comic cannot and will not change that.
@Lovegood I could start going on thru your post and argue with it but no time for that. If indeed this is another Lois & Clark comic book at a time when even the DC in continuity comics has broken them up then I will probably not be buying this.
I’ll leave this from the man responsible of revamping Superman in the late 80′s:
What was your reasoning behind having Lana be the one to have known Clark’s identity from the beginning?
John Byrne: If I had really had the free hand some fans are convinced I did, I would have dumped Lois altogether and brought Lana back as Superman/Clark’s one true love. But there were somethings that had to remain inviolable, and one was the Superman/Lois/Clark relationship. So I did the best I could to justify Lana’s position in his life — a position that was imposed not by any sort of internal logic, but by the simple fact that Superboy and his supporting cast were created years after the debut of Superman.
[*]I could start going on thru your post and argue with it but no time for that.[*]
Sure. I imagine it would take a lot of time to find a way to dispute all of the show canon I shared that disputes your tired second choice argument.
[*]If indeed this is another Lois & Clark comic book at a time when even the DC in continuity comics has broken them up then I will probably not be buying this.[*]
IF? Have you been following ANY of the news about this comic? EVERY SINGLE press release has said that in the comic Lois and Clark would be happy, together, and that nothing would change that. It’s a continuation of the “Smallville” universe EXACTLY as it was when the show finished up its historic 10 year run last May in which Lois and Clark had already walked down the aisle, said their vows, and were ENGAGED until they could make official what was already official in their hearts.
DC Comics didn’t break Lois and Clark up. They ended one era of them being together and decided to tell their story all over again. They may not be married like they were since the 1990s, but they’re still friends and co-workers with some romantic tension. There’s already been light foreshadowing of Lois and Clark ending up together in the DCnU as well. Will Clark date other people before then? Sure. Clark in the post-Crisis era and Clark on “Smallville” dated other people before Lois. That won’t change their ending.
[*]I’ll leave this from the man responsible of revamping Superman in the late 80′s[*]
I’m really not sure why you thought that was relevant to a discussion about a comic book that is only being allowed to exist because it’s a continuation of a successful TV show almost 30 years since Byrne. The Season 11 comic was NEVER going to be an opportunity to revamp ANYTHING. Where you got that ridiculous notion is beyond me. I suppose it was desperate wishful thinking. Besides, reading Byrne’s quote it’s clear that DC is determined to keep Lois and Clark together. Some writers are more fond of them than others. Byrne wasn’t, but he made it work.
Soon, new writers took over from Byrne–writers like Greg Rucka, Paul Cornell, and Kurt Busiek, etc.–who have gone on record to say how much they like Lois and Lois and Clark. Bryan Q. Miller, who’s writing the Season 11 comic LOVES Lois and Clark. He said in an interview once that his favorite moments from the ENTIRE series were (1) the dunk tank scene with Lois and Clark in “Facade” and (2) the floating “I love you” dance in “Homecoming.”
So, you know what? I’m feeling pretty good about Lois and Clark right now. I might be frustrated with the New 52, but I have faith that Lois and Clark will make it someday; they always do. Meanwhile, I get to watch Clois in MAN OF STEEL starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams and read Clois in SEASON 11 of “Smallville” written by Bryan Q. Miller. Awesome, right?
Thank you so much for what you said about Lex and the issue of his memories. What they did in the finale was essentially destroy one of their most complex and interesting characters. It’s as if his journey throughout the series and his friednship with Clark did not matter one bit. I really hope he wll regain his memories in the comics.
In my opinion, the memory wipe in the series finale was an absolute necessity. Lex Luthor, especially this Lex Luthor, should not have been in any way aware that Clark Kent is Superman. Knowing Clark’s secret simply gives Lex too much power and puts Superman at a dangerous disadvantage. All of Lex’s memories and experiences on the show–anything that might connect Clark Kent to Superman–needed to go. Fortunately, the way Lex’s mind-wipe was done left room for the product of Lex’s experiences in Smallville to continue to shape and influence his personality, instincts, and behaviors. Tess told Lex the serum from Summerholt was designed to paralyze cognitive recognition. From a neuroscientific perspective this means Lex will retain his semantic memory (his personality, instincts, and learned behaviors) that formed as a result of his interactions with Clark and everyone else in Smallville from 2001-2011. He just won’t be able to recall the specific memories that shaped his particular phenomenology. Moreover, since Clark/Superman will remember everything about his relationship with Lex Luthor, it’s not as though EVERYTHING that happened is completely gone and useless. It still matters. It matters because Lex will be the same man he was prior to the mind-wipe just without the specific episodic memories that made him a very dangerous man and Clark will be a better man and a better Superman because of the lessons he learned from his decade long relationship with Lex.
I really enjoyed this show. It’s interesting how many people seem to be crossing their fingers in hopes of a Lana return and a Clois breakup. You know I liked Lana Lang in the comics she was amusing in the silver age comics here she was little more than a shallow tramp who struggled with Lois for Superman’s affections and eventually found out that he loved Lois and not her. I like her in the modern age comics (pre new 52 reboot) where she was the girl from back home who dated him briefly in high school and never got over him, moved to metropolis as his sort of stalker. She ultimately again realizes that he loves Lois and NOT HER.
The Lana Lang of this series was an increasingly manipulative character. She started out sweet and became a powermad goldigging witch.
Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane Kent hav always been my two favorite characters in comic history, loved them in almost all of their tv (animated or otherwise) and movie incarnations. I thinks it’s interesting how wonderful a dynamic we get to see with all of the CLois’s including Welling and Durance. I think that they were both great on that show. The only missmatched Clois was when they replaced Phyllis Coate with Noel Neill in the second season of the Superman adventures of the 1950s. The first season of that series was awesome and Coates Lois was an impressive lady who was smart enough to get herself out of many crazy situations without Supes help and tough enough to throw a solid punch (on 1950s television no less). Noel Neill was decent in the 1940s serials with Kirk Alyn, those two worked well together. Durance played the badass side of Lois quite well.
Oh my the Clois fans remind me of old people who can’t let go of the things they are used to. You know what, I am so rich that in a few years time I’ll establish my own team and write my own Smallville/Superman where I will put Clark with who I want to.
I had to watch some of the shows where Dean Cain was Superman just to get into the whole Lois&Clark vibe to be able to finish watching Smallville, because I loved Lois&Clark as a kid (with Teri&Dean).
So they had their run and ended up happily together, it’s just right that in a new show it should be Lana’s turn. Do all of you really believe that it’s impossible to love more than one person in a true and pure way?
Why I don’t think Lois is right for Clark/don’t like her: she doesn’t love animals, she’s a city girl and Clark loves the outdoors and used to go horseriding with Lana and so on. But what really bothers me is how people can love that they keep on being disrespectful towards each other, more Lois than Clark. But being sarcastic, witty and full of yourself was never anyone I know’s idea of a supportive partner. And what dit Lois ever have to give up for Clark? Lana made many sacrifices. She showed dedication. Everyone in his life had to “earn” knowing his secret, all his friends as well as Lana. Lois never does anything to that effect. Lana is soft tempered, kind, gentle and loves animals and she can also be strong and funny. But I guess we live in world where the rolemodels tell kids that it’s cool to break down your partner, because it’s just being “spicy” or adding “humour”.
Clana fans, I will make the former Smallville actors offers they can’t refuse and we will have our alternate universe with Clark&Lana. I loved Oliver and Lois together. He is more of a match for fast speaking self loving lois.
And people, remember – they DON’T EXIST. We can all have our cake and eat it – Clois and Clana fans alike.
I love the green arrow! And I certainly do not want Lana back! That’s a big NO NO! Keep Ollie!!!!
